Generational Trends in the Use of AI Chatbots for Emotional Expression and Support : A Scoping Review
Abstract
This study maps the existing literature on the use of AI chatbots for emotional expression and psychological support across generations. A total of 18 studies (2018–2025) were analyzed using a scoping review approach following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Findings indicate that chatbot effectiveness is more consistent among adolescents and young adults than among older adults. Clear generational differences emerge in terms of acceptance, trust, perceived barriers, and meanings attributed to emotional support. The results highlight the need for age-sensitive, ethically grounded, and equity-oriented design of AI mental health chatbots.
