Chemically Modified Curcumin in Periodontal therapy: A Scoping Review
Abstract
Introduction Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease driven by a dysregulated host immune response leading to connective tissue breakdown and alveolar bone loss. Although conventional periodontal therapy targets microbial biofilms, it does not adequately address host-mediated inflammatory pathways. Curcumin has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but its clinical translation is limited by poor bioavailability. Chemically modified curcumin (CMC) analogues have been developed to overcome these limitations and enhance therapeutic potential. Objective The objective of this scoping review is to systematically map and characterize the available preclinical evidence evaluating chemically modified curcumin analogues in the management of periodontitis. Methods and Analysis This scoping review protocol will follow the methodological frameworks proposed by Arksey and O’Malley and further refined by Levac et al., in accordance with the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis. Reporting of the final review will adhere to the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Electronic searches will be conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science, with no restrictions on publication year and limited to English-language studies.
