Abstract

This short philosophical fable serves as the narrative companion to the essay The Button and The King (Chang 2026h). It specifically dramatizes the essay's closing section, "Waking: Closing the Enumeration," which addresses concepts of free will, authorship, and equal standing. Utilizing iconography from Doctor Who—specifically the Daleks and the Doctor—the story constructs a thought experiment surrounding a King who attempts to escape vulnerability by collapsing all branches of the Many-Worlds that contain a dissenting perspective. Through this narrative, the piece explores the metaphysical and psychological terror of absolute control, demonstrating how sovereign power becomes meaningless when devoid of independent wills capable of genuine refusal. The fable concludes with a grounding transition to a psychiatric hospital setting, illustrating the limits of control and the inevitability of mortality. Note: This manuscript contains depictions of psychiatric hospitalization, physical restraints, a manic episode, and themes of power, control, and mortality.
