Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) with Youth Populations in Mental Health Research: A Scoping Review Protocol
Abstract
One in five children and young people in England have a probable mental disorder, however only 40% receive support from NHS mental health services. This highlights a need for effective assessment and treatment to address the gap in youth mental health care. Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) is an essential component of the research process, ensuring that research reflects the priorities of the affected population. By involving individuals with lived experience, research becomes more relevant and impactful, however youth populations are an underrepresented group in PPIE. This scoping review aims to explore how young people with mental health disorders have been involved in PPIE, the activities undertaken, and potential barriers and facilitators to engaging youth populations.
