Abstract

Interactive digital case vignettes in a click-based decision tree format offer structured, scalable, and process-oriented learning opportunities in higher education. By guiding learners through predefined decision paths, they make complex professional situations manageable while preserving authenticity. The stepwise structure reduces extraneous cognitive load and supports systematic reasoning, particularly in domains such as data-based decision-making (DBDM) or diagnostic judgment. The digital implementation enables immediate feedback, automated scoring, and the collection of detailed process data, including decision sequences and response times. This allows not only outcome evaluation but also the analysis of reasoning pathways. In addition, decision tree formats ensure comparability across learners, making them suitable for formative assessment, summative evaluation, and research on professional competence development. Their scalability and low resource requirements further support their use in large university courses across disciplines.
