Protocol for a Scoping Review: Multimodal Digital Monitoring of Daily Living in Older Adults
Abstract
This scoping review aims to map the technological landscape of multimodal digital monitoring systems designed to support "aging in place" for older adults by addressing the "contextual blindness" associated with traditional single-sensor approaches. By integrating diverse data streams—including physiological, environmental, and behavioral data—this study explores the current extent and nature of systems used to assess activities of daily living (ADL) and functional health. Following the JBI methodological framework and utilizing a hybrid AI-human workflow (facilitated by Gemini 2.5 Flash and Claude 3 Haiku), we will categorize these technologies across three primary axes: physical embodiment (Ambient, Mobile/Wearable, Robotics), user engagement (Passive, Reactive, Active), and application domains. The findings will provide a comprehensive roadmap and gap analysis to guide the future development of context-aware monitoring infrastructures for the early detection of functional decline in aging populations.
