Non-Pharmacological Interventions in the Prevention and Management of Delirium Among Older In-Hospital Patients: A Scoping Review
Abstract
This scoping review will identify and map how non-pharmacological interventions for delirium prevention and management are operationalised in studies of hospitalised older adults (≥65 years) in medical and geriatric wards. The review will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews and be structured according to the Population–Concept–Context framework. It will identify and map reported intervention components, delivery characteristics, professional roles, resource requirements, and reported outcomes. The review will include primary studies of any design and relevant grey literature. It will not assess intervention effectiveness. The aim is to provide a structured overview of how these interventions are defined and implemented in clinical practice. Expected outcomes include identification of variation in intervention content and delivery, mapping of outcome measurement approaches, and identification of gaps in reporting. The findings will inform subsequent intervention development within a broader PhD project focused on improving delirium care in hospitalised older adults.
