Abstract

This repository contains the code and sample data used in the study: “Decoding the evolution of melodic and harmonic structure of Western music through the lens of Network Science.” The project implements a network-based framework to model and analyze the structural evolution of Western music. Musical compositions are represented as directed weighted networks derived from MIDI note transitions. Nodes correspond to pitch events, and edges encode transition between notes. The repository includes: - Functions to construct networks from MIDI files - Methods to compute normalized intervals embeddings used in the study - Test scripts demonstrating the full pipeline from MIDI input to network visualization and embedding extraction All code is written in R and relies on standard libraries including igraph, tuneR, tabr and the tidyverse.
