Abstract

Computational chemistry is a vital field of study in modern chemistry, providing insights into molecular behavior and properties through various calculation methods. This paper explores several computational techniques, including Molecular Mechanics (MM), Semi-Empirical Methods, Ab Initio Methods, and Density Functional Theory (DFT). Molecular Mechanics, with its empirical force fields, allows for fast simulations and large-scale thermodynamic calculations but suffers from limitations in accuracy for electronic properties. Semi-Empirical Methods, such as CNDO and AM1, strike a balance between computational efficiency and quantum accuracy, offering rapid calculations for molecular structure and reactivity. Ab Initio Methods, grounded in quantum theory, provide highly accurate predictions but at the cost of significant computational resources. DFT, a more recent approach, offers an excellent compromise between accuracy and computational cost, making it popular for studying organic, inorganic, and biomolecular systems. The paper discusses the strengths, limitations, and applications of these methods in computational chemistry, highlighting their relevance in research and practical applications, such as materials science and biochemistry.
