Abstract

Levels of Health Literacy (HL) of individuals are the skills and competencies involved in making and developing decisions in the health process, representing a powerful construct for Public Health. Sorensen and colleagues¹ comprehensively conceptualize it as “The motivation and skills of individuals to access, understand, evaluate, and apply health information in order to make judgments and decisions in daily life related to health care, disease prevention, and health promotion, to maintain or improve their quality of life throughout their lives.”¹. Due to the lack of a Brazilian health literacy measurement instrument that is more adapted and suitable to the sociocultural reality of the population and that uses a comprehensive conceptualization of health literacy, advances in evaluations and reflections on existing instruments can support the development of a Brazilian tool. Structuring the literature through reviews becomes strategic, as it can guide effective actions in the field of health. This scoping review is expected to contribute to the development of a preliminary version of a Brazilian health literacy measurement instrument, which could build health literacy indicators more consistent with the national reality and actions aimed at its development and strengthening. Therefore, this review aims to map the instruments used to measure health literacy to date through a scoping review.
