The Coherence‑Time Framework III: Variational Principles and the Limits of Conservative Dynamics
Abstract
The Coherence‑Time Framework III develops the variational foundations of coherence dynamics and establishes the mathematical boundary between reversible structure formation and irreversible decay. Building on OP1 (global coherence evolution) and OP2 (local transport and reaction–diffusion structure), this paper investigates whether the coherence‑time equation can be derived from an action principle. The work constructs a Lagrangian density for the conservative component of the coherence field, derives the corresponding Euler–Lagrange equations, and identifies the Noether symmetries and conserved quantities associated with reversible coherence dynamics. The analysis shows that these conservative processes admit a clean variational formulation analogous to classical field theories. In contrast, the dissipative term of the coherence‑time equation is shown to be fundamentally non‑variational due to its first‑order, irreversible character. This establishes a structural boundary within coherence dynamics: reversible organisation is variational; dissipative decay is not. OP3 therefore clarifies the mathematical architecture of the coherence‑time framework and prepares the ground for future developments in OP4–OP6.
