Abstract

This report summarizes activities and findings from an evaluation of MathFluency+, an online supplemental math platform designed to improve math fact fluency and math-related executive function skills for students in Grades 4 and 5. The platform consists of (a) games that combine math fact fluency and executive function skill development and (b) a sequence of teacher-led collaborative math lessons. DOWNLOAD FULL REPORT HERE: https://osf.io/atj53 The MathFluency+ platform was initially developed as part of the MathicSTEAM research and development project led by researchers at MIND Research Institute. The team designed, refined, and conducted pilot studies of the MathicSTEAM program with funding from EF+Math, a program of the Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF). EF+Math continued to fund the development of the MathFluency+ platform—including through additional focused iteration and a researcher-led pilot study. EF+Math commissioned the American Institutes for Research® (AIR®) to conduct a large-scale independent evaluation of MathFluency+ during the 2024–25 school year. The evaluation included analyses of program implementation, teacher and student perspectives of the program, and the program’s impact on student outcomes as compared to business-as-usual (BAU) instruction.
