Abstract

Coherence Across Scales explores the surprising structural similarity between two seemingly unrelated domains: 1. Energy‑driven pattern formation in physical systems, and 2. Rise‑and‑fall dynamics in complex systems such as ecosystems, species lineages, and civilisations. Although these systems differ in scale, composition, and mechanism, they exhibit the same underlying architecture: a driver, a resistance, a threshold, a coherent regime, a breakdown regime, and a renewal pathway. This project demonstrates that the mathematical structure behind physical coherence formation and the universal Coherence Cycle is effectively identical. The work synthesises two independent models: - Coherence Formation Through Energy Flow — a physical framework showing how energy gradients produce ordered structures such as convection cells, Rayleigh–Taylor plumes, dendritic crystals, and electroconvection patterns. - The Coherence Cycle — a general systems model describing how coherence rises, stabilises, declines, collapses, and renews across biological, ecological, and civilisational systems. By placing these models side‑by‑side, the project shows that both follow the same structural logic despite operating at different scales. This suggests that coherence may be a scale‑invariant organising principle of nonequilibrium systems. The paper outlines the shared architecture, develops cross‑domain predictions, and proposes coherence as a unifying mechanism linking physical pattern formation with large‑scale system behaviour. It is intended as a conceptual bridge between physics and systems science, offering a foundation for future interdisciplinary research.
