The Herki Tribe — Migrations, History, and Civilizational Identity: A Comprehensive Research
Abstract
The Herki Tribe — Migrations, History, and Civilizational Identity is a comprehensive historical research produced by Mesopotamia Insights, completed in 2021 after four years of study, and updated in 2023 and 2026. The research traces the Herki Kurdish tribal confederation across seven centuries — from medieval Islamic chronicles and Ottoman imperial records to British mandate-era intelligence reports and contemporary Kurdish regional politics. It reconstructs four documented migration corridors from the Herki homeland of Şemzînan (Hakkâri, Turkey) toward Urmia (Iran), Rawanduz–Erbil, Halgurd–Choman, and the Nineveh–Mosul corridor, drawing on primary sources including the Ottoman State Archives (BOA), the Türk Tarih Kurumu, Encyclopaedia Iranica, and Arabic tribal encyclopaedias. With a documented population of over 118,000 worldwide, the Herki remain one of the most historically significant and politically active Kurdish tribal confederations in the Middle East.
