Beyond the Energy Paradigm: Information Efficiency and New Horizons in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
Abstract
This paper presents a fundamental critique of the Kardashev scale—the energy-centric paradigm that has long dominated the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Based on an analysis of Landauer’s Principle and the thermodynamic limits of information processing, the author proposes an alternative hypothesis: advanced civilizations may evolve toward "Technological Minimalism" rather than mass energy consumption or megastructure construction. The study introduces the "Intelligence Density Scale (IDS)" as a new metric for civilizational advancement. Within this framework, highly advanced civilizations could become effectively "transparent" to traditional observation methods. The paper explores the characteristics of these "invisible civilizations" and advocates for "Quantum-Cognitive SETI," a new exploration strategy based on information theory. Ultimately, it suggests that the "Great Silence" of the Fermi Paradox may stem from our own epistemological limitations rather than the absence of extraterrestrial life.
