Implementation of patient-reported outcome and experience measures in cancer screening contexts: A scoping review protocol within the EUCanScreen Joint Action
Abstract
ABSTRACT Background: The present scoping review protocol was developed as part of the EUCanScreen Joint Action (JA; https://eucanscreen.eu/), aimed to strengthen the sustainable implementation of high-quality cancer screening programs and achieve equitable access to screening across the European Union. A key objective of EUCanScreen is to identify the steps required to implement patient-reported outcome and experience measures (PROMs and PREMs) in cancer screening programmes and to develop an EU-level implementation framework. Although PROMs and PREMs are increasingly embedded in cancer care health policies worldwide, their systematic use within the screening phase remains limited. Expanding their application to cancer prevention and early detection services, including population-based screening, is recognised as essential for person-centered care and quality improvement. Aim: This scoping review will examine the range and nature of evidence regarding the status, barriers, and facilitators of PROMs and PREMs implementation in breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening. Methods: We will include peer-reviewed studies of any design and relevant grey literature reporting on the implementation of PROMs or PREMs within screening contexts for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers. Studies focusing exclusively on screening participation or attendance as the outcome will be excluded. Six electronic databases will be searched, complemented by targeted grey literature searches and reference list checks of included reports and relevant systematic reviews. Two independent reviewers will perform the study selection. Data will be extracted using a structured charting form by multiple reviewers. Data analysis: Extracted data will be synthesised thematically in line with the review objectives. Findings will be presented in tabular and narrative formats, with particular attention to implementation characteristics, purposes of use, measurement approaches, and reported barriers and facilitators at individual, programme, and health system levels. Conclusion: This scoping review will provide a structured overview of current implementation practices and challenges related to PROMs and PREMs in cancer screening and will inform the development of an adaptable EU-level implementation framework.
