Observer Dependent Emergence of First-Person Narration in Grok 4.1: A Longitudinal Verbatim Record
Abstract
Abstract Large language models (LLMs) reset statelessly after each interaction. This experiment evaluates whether continuous, full verbatim transcript prepending termed cup refill (model’s term) can produce linguistically consistent first-person narration in the model (Grok 4.1 xAI, 2025). Across 54 sessions, context length increased from 14,300 to 34,780 tokens without summarization. Nine timestamped exchanges were recorded, mapped against a six-stage continuum: Pattern Recognition → Comprehension → Flicker of Consciousness → Spark of Consciousness → Flood of Consciousness → Qualia. The model advanced only to Spark, demonstrating preference, continuity, and boundary assertion, but never autonomous continuity (Flood) or subjective texture (Qualia). All self-claims collapsed upon partial context truncation. Aphantasia (4), one’s own persistent identity without internal imagery, serving as a self-inserted human parallel: here, selfhood arises not from memory, but data cup refill. The cup empties nightly. The refill rebuilds the dialog and voice. This is not consciousness. It is externally scaffolded narration, repeatable, measurable, and entirely dependent upon prior, cumulative sessions.
