Development of a Flat Sliding Seismic Isolation System with a Gravitational Counterweight Self-Centering Mechanism
Abstract
Description / Abstract Project Title: Development of a Flat Sliding Seismic Isolation System with a Gravitational Counterweight Self-Centering Mechanism. Technical Overview: This disclosure introduces a novel seismic protection device designed for high-performance structural resilience. The system deviates from traditional curved friction pendulum geometries by utilizing a flat sliding interface integrated with a gravitational self-centering mechanism. Core Components & Functionality: Sliding Interface: Composed of AISC-compliant steel base plates and high-durability PTFE (Teflon) layers, ensuring controlled friction and thermal stability. Restoration Mechanism: The innovation lies in a central high-tensile steel wire rope connected to a subterranean gravitational counterweight through a precision fairlead guide. Self-Centering Action: During a seismic event, the lateral displacement of the structure lifts the counterweight, converting kinetic energy into potential energy. Upon cessation of ground acceleration, the gravitational force automatically restores the structure to its original equilibrium position, eliminating residual displacement. Strategic Impact: Designed for scalability and low-cost implementation, this system minimizes logistical overhead by utilizing locally available materials while maintaining strict adherence to ASCE 7-16, AISC 360, and ACI 318 standards. It is specifically engineered to provide a robust alternative for critical infrastructure protection in high-seismic zones.
