CALCULATION METHODS
Abstract
**Abstract** Computational chemistry employs mathematical and computational methods to predict molecular properties and reaction mechanisms. This review examines fundamental calculation approaches ranging from classical to quantum mechanical techniques. Molecular mechanics utilizes force fields for efficient treatment of large systems, while quantum mechanical methods including ab initio, density functional theory (DFT), and semi-empirical approaches provide varying levels of accuracy and computational cost. Ab initio methods offer rigorous electronic structure calculations, DFT balances accuracy with efficiency, and semi-empirical techniques enable rapid predictions through parametrization. Hybrid QM/MM methods combine quantum and classical treatments for complex systems. Understanding these methodologies' theoretical foundations, advantages, and limitations is crucial for selecting appropriate computational strategies in chemical research applications.
