5.12 Excerpt from a student-led lecture recital with reflection on the project
Abstract
This video captures an exceptional excerpt from a comprehensive student-led lecture recital that serves as a summative reflection on their musical and academic journey. This presentation offers a powerful reflection on their personal and collective experiences within the research intervention, blending live piano performance, research insights, and candid personal commentary. The footage illustrates how targeted intervention, multi-sensory guidance and reflective practice allow young pianists to reconceptualise playing as a coordinated, embodied activity. The lecture begins with solo piano performances, showcasing the students' technical command and expressive growth. Following the music, the students engage in a sophisticated dialogue regarding their research findings, specifically focusing on the development of coordinated movement and how their understanding of physical efficiency at the keyboard evolved throughout the project. The narrative shifts to the hurdles faced during both solo practice and the research process, where students detail their problem-solving strategies and the resulting impact on their musical development. This is followed by a transition into collaborative duets, highlighting the shift from individual mastery to ensemble coordination. Finally, the teacher-researcher provides a concluding reflection, situating the students' achievements within the broader pedagogical framework.Entirely student-driven, the presentation utilises self-prepared visual aids and a diversified delivery format that balances high-level performance with insightful, independent analysis. This recital exemplifies the profound outcomes of a student-centred, participatory pedagogy—where young pianists not only achieve technical and expressive advancement but also develop the capacity to articulate, reflect upon, and teach their own learning process. This video forms part of a broader research project investigating the development of coordinated movement in piano performance, with applications in piano pedagogy, injury prevention, and performance enhancement.
