Abstract

These two videos serve as exemplars demonstrating how different sloping seat heights affect a pianist’s posture and wrist position. Although the differences may be subtle upon observation, the player can distinctly feel the variations. They showcase various seating angles, including the use of a forward-sloping bench at varying heights.A sloping bench promotes improved pelvic alignment and spinal posture by tilting the seat slightly forward, encouraging a neutral lumbar spine and better weight distribution. This ergonomic adjustment enhances comfort, supports optimal posture, improves wrist and forearm positioning, and can potentially reduce lower back pain. By alleviating pressure on abdominal organs and stabilising the pelvis, the sloping bench enables pianists to play more sustainably with less fatigue. These videos form part of a broader research project investigating the development of coordinated movement in piano performance, with applications in piano pedagogy, injury prevention, and performance enhancement.
