5.4 Finding a balance with proper sitting posture and alignment on the piano
Abstract
This student-led video demonstrates how to cultivate a deeper connection between posture and coordinated piano playing through targeted exercises. Discussion and visualisations explore critical ergonomic factors—including bench height and distance, spinal alignment, arm positioning, foot placement, and the conscious engagement of the sitting bones (ischial tuberosities) to establish a stable foundation. By focusing on these physical anchors, the presenter shows how a stable base supports core stability, flexibility, and natural breathing. The exercises emphasise developing postural awareness to release unnecessary tension, promoting a comfortable, aligned presence at the keyboard. These insights view the body as a unified, integrated system—one that facilitates fluid movement and musical expression. This video forms part of a broader research project investigating the development of coordinated movement in piano performance, with applications in piano pedagogy, injury prevention, and performance enhancement.
