Hydrodynamic pore-bridging and permeability impairement in heterogeneous porous media: microfluidic data-set
Abstract
This dataset contains microfluidic experimental data quantifying permeability impairment caused by hydrodynamic particle bridging in a heterogeneous, tortuous porous micromodel. Experiments are performed in PDMS devices under controlled pressure drops while varying particle diameter and suspension concentration. The dataset includes time-resolved flow-rate and permeability evolution, particle size distributions (PSD), constriction size distributions (CSD) extracted from the geometry, and stitched end-state images after complete clogging across multiple conditions. A high-quality time-lapse video of a baseline case is also provided to visualize progressive clogging, abrupt pore-blocking events, and flow rerouting in real time. In addition, the dataset enables a comparative assessment of the influence of key parameters on pore-bridging behavior, showing that particle size has the strongest impact on permeability impairment among the conditions explored. The data serve as well as an experimental benchmark for a collaborative probabilistic pore-network modeling study of arch formation, reported in the associated International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences publication.
