Abstract
Abstract The literary inquisition and systematic historical revisionism of the early Qing Dynasty pushed the memory of the Southern Ming to the brink of total erasure. Confronted with this desperate situation, loyalist literati developed an exceptionally subtle and covert tradition of writing. As the crowning literary achievement of this era, Dream of the Red Chamber has long posed a central enigma in Redology: whether beneath its surface narrative of family saga lies a complete, "encrypted history of anguish." The principle of "one voice, two songs; one hand, two texts" ("一声两歌、一手二牍") elucidated by Zhiyanzhai provides the key to deciphering this puzzle. This study proposes that Dream of the Red Chamber is not merely a novel of manners, but an "esoteric historical record" that employs an aesthetic of "polyphonic encoding" to systematically and metaphorically transcribe the history of the Southern Ming's rise and fall. Using the historical framework consolidated by Gu Cheng's History of the Southern Ming as an external coordinate and adopting an interdisciplinary method of deep intertextual analysis, this research conducts a decryption and reinterpretation of the text. The findings are as follows: First, through covert temporal symbols such as the sexagenary cycle terms "Gengyin" and "Dingmao", the novel anchors crucial historical nodes within Southern Ming history, constituting an encrypted poetic chronicle. Second, and more fundamentally, by leveraging the intricate relational network of "Baoyu (the Imperial Seal) – Qingwen (Talent and Ambition) – Yingchun (Legitimacy and Title) – the Nursing Mother (the Internal Parasite)", the novel constructs a comprehensive metaphorical model of power structure. This model profoundly reveals the entire process through which the imperial authority of the Longwu court was hollowed out, its ideals defiled and destroyed, its legitimacy betrayed, and how internal actors consummated the "cashing-out" of power. Finally, the elegiac poetics exemplified by "The Elegy for the Hibiscus Maid" and "Song of Purple Caltrop Isle", while displaying supreme aesthetic force, also lays bare a profound paradox of the old civilizational system: its capacity for mourning was eclipsed by its incapacity for regeneration. This research demonstrates that Dream of the Red Chamber is, in essence, a "fortress of memory" constructed in an ultimate aesthetic form. Under the siege of official historical narrative, it successfully forged the proscribed historical truth into immortal literary imagery, achieving the covert perpetuation of a civilization's spiritual lineage in extremis. This inquiry not only opens a new paradigm for Dream of the Red Chamber studies that integrates robust historical evidence with theoretical depth but also provides an exemplary model from the Chinese tradition for understanding the mechanisms of cultural trauma memory preservation.
