Abstract
The "Mirror of Romance" in Dream of the Red Chamber functions as a metaphor for the text's own duality: its obverse presents an enchanting tale of romance and sensuality, while its reverse reveals the terrifying skeletal remains of history. Proceeding from the premise of the "Liu Rushi as core creator" hypothesis, this study proposes that the "Mirror of Romance" in Dream of the Red Chamber is a functional meta-narrative device whose "obverse/reverse" principle constitutes the operational core of the text's esoteric writing. Drawing upon her traumatic personal experience of the Ming-Qing dynastic transition and her political networks, the author systematically transposed the martyrdom of the Chongzhen Emperor and Shi Kefa into literary code. Employing a "text-historical archaeology" approach, this paper conducts an internal and external close reading of the narrative units centered on Jia Rui (courtesy name Tianxiang) and Qin Keqing. By cross-referencing the Zhiyanzhai commentary with historical sources from the Southern Ming period, it demonstrates how the novel constructs the dual imagery of "romance/sensuality versus historical gravity" (fengyue/hanqing): the surface layer presents an ethical parable of romantic affairs, while the deeper layer constitutes a historical tragedy and philosophical reflection on the collapse of imperial authority and the plight of loyal ministers. This research not only provides an empirical case study of the historical subtext in Dream of the Red Chamber but also illuminates the unique writing strategy by which a female adherent of the former dynasty used the novel form to preserve and reconstruct traumatic memory.
