Lynchings at the Kern County Jail, 1879, ver 3
Abstract
From a close-by outcropping of rocks two shots broke the calm. Bill Johnson threw up his arms and cried out, "I've been shot!" At the same time, Tucker fell from his wagon. Driving a wagon 50 yards ahead were James Bernard, James Webb and F. Langford. They came running and found Mrs. Burdett hysterical and Johnson and Tucker lying dead on the road. As others arrived from Long Tom, expressions of horror changed to rage. Because of the bad blood between the Yoakums and Tucker, most were sure the Yoakums did it.
