History in Bakersfield Sidewalks, 1893-2026
Abstract
Beginning about 1900, Kern County building contractors often stamped their concrete sidewalks with their companes' names. Here are some and their companies' histories. Mentioned here are early cement kilns, the snowballing effect of oil production on cement manufacturing, and a major limestone and silica deposit that spurred the advance of local sidewalk construction. Mentioned are changes in building codes for safeguarding public safety.
