Abstract
This study proposes and substantiates a groundbreaking hypothesis concerning the authorship of Hongloumeng (Dream of the Red Chamber): the Southern Ming minister and literary master Qian Qianyi (1582–1664) was not only the historical prototype for the novel's character triad of Li Wan, Miao Yu, and Jia Yucun—through a process of artistic "split representation" that encodes his fractured psyche—but also one of the "invisible authors" who deeply intervened in the novel's composition, revision, and finalization under the pseudonym "Zhiyanzhai" (Red Inkstone Commentary). Employing a self-constructed "textual archaeology" paradigm, this research executes a logically rigorous, dual-verification operation within a closed evidentiary set (the Zhiyanzhai commentaries from the Jiaxu and Gengchen manuscripts and core Southern Ming historical documents from 1644–1683). First, through a procedural "four-dimensional mapping" (time, space, persona, event), it systematically decodes the literary ciphers of Li Wan (the political mask), Miao Yu (the moral remnant), and Jia Yucun (the social persona) as a tripartite literary transposition of Qian Qianyi's internal world. Second, it pioneers a quantitative and qualitative analysis of approximately twelve definitive instances of "creative intervention" within the commentaries, revealing their fourfold function, commanding deletions, discussing plotlines, textual proofreading, and claiming co-authorship, which proves the commentator's exercise of "author-editor" authority. Ultimately, this research conjoins these two lines of evidence, demonstrating that both the textual surface (the character split-system) and the textual genesis (the traces of commentary intervention) collectively point to Qian Qianyi's dual presence as both historical referent and creative agent. This provides a novel, verifiable, and systematic explanation for the enigma of Hongloumeng's creation, its authorship, and its profound connection to the intellectual history of the Ming-Qing transition.
