Abstract
Abstract Current research on Dream of the Red Chamber predominantly focuses on the Cao family lineage, textual philosophy, or literary metaphors, often overlooking the profound historical sorrow and civilizational trauma that permeate the deeper layers of the novel—a grief that far exceeds the tragedy of a single family. This has led to a significant absence of historical context. This study proposes that beneath the surface of the text lies a systematic and precise chronological cipher, effectively rendering the work a covert chronicle of the painful history of the Southern Ming dynasty, encoded in literary allegory. To substantiate this hypothesis, the research employs methods of close textual reading, calendrical verification, and historical source comparison, revealing a meticulously designed system of textual encoding. For instance, the episode of the mistaken identification of "Geng Huang" is actually a recombination of the first character of "Geng Huang" and the last character of "Tang Yin," pointing to the "Geng Yin" day (the third day of the fifth lunar month), which marks the establishment of the Southern Ming Hongguang regime. The "Observing Geng Shen" ritual in the "Feast at Night in Happy Red Court" corresponds to the key historical moment when the Qing court issued the hair-shaving decree. Similarly, the proverb "Ding is Ding, Mao is Mao," the Flower Farewell Ceremony on the twenty-sixth day of the fourth lunar month, and numerous cyclical dates in the Zhiyanzhai commentaries (such as Renwu, Yiyou, Jimao, Dinghai, and Jiawu) have been found to align precisely with the timelines of Southern Ming regime changes, internal conflicts, and major tragedies. This form of writing represents a practice of "esoteric writing" created under the severe literary inquisition of the early Qing period, aimed at preserving historical truths that were being erased by official authorities. Therefore, we argue that Dream of the Red Chamber is not merely a literary masterpiece but also a "fortress of memory" that carries the traumatic memories of a nation. By transforming historical time into literary codes, it successfully circumvented official censorship and alteration, preserving for Han civilization a hidden historical record imbued with emotional depth and moral judgment. This demonstrates the role of literature in sustaining memory and exercising resistance during moments of civilizational crisis.
