Long-term sucralose diet can induce insulin resistance leading to dyslipidemia, inflammation and vascular endothelial dysfunction, thereby increasing the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
Abstract
In this study, we hypothesized that sucralose increases the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in mice. Obesity may be the first event to start. Inflammatory factors and dyslipidemia secondary to obesity can initiate the process of atherosclerosis. Inflammation-induced insulin resistance and endothelial cell dysfunction are also involved in the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis. Sucralose can increase the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in mice. This is not due to obesity, but to insulin resistance caused by the sucralose diet. Subsequently, dyslipidemia, inflammation and endothelial cell dysfunction secondary to insulin resistance are important reasons for the development of atherosclerosis.
