Abstract

This audio clip is from a series of 100 life history interviews with environmental campaigners in the UK, 1970-2020. A quotation from this recording features in the book Voices for Change, published by UCL Press in November 2026 (available in print as well as a free PDF download). The full interview, along with the summaries, transcripts and recordings for this and the rest of the interview collection, is available at the British Library (Sound and Moving Image Collection, under the shelf-mark C2037). Get, on the way there we hear the, there was- There’s, we’re going to the Green Fields, it was at the Green Fields and Reclaim the Streets. Green Fields was really important for the grassroots direct action actually. It was really a place at Glastonbury where we would, people would meet and stuff. And on the way I hear the radio going, that someone had been beaten nearly to death by a security guard trying to get in to free Glastonbury. I didn’t have a ticket. Get there, there’s cops everywhere. I kind of infiltrate myself through a cop line, get into the forest, sleep in the forest, wake up, there’s two security guards sitting next to me and I’m like, oh fuck they’re going- Well it was right by the fence and like here, God they’re going to see me. And they see me. And they’re like, ‘What are you doing there?’ And I’m like, oh do I tell them the truth or not? And I go, ‘Oh I’m trying to get in.’ And they go, ‘Come this way.’ And I’m like, okay this is it. This is the end of my life. They’re going to take me down a little tunnel and I’m going to be beaten to death like a ferret or something. [laughing] And then I go down this little thing and then there’s a hole in the fence and there’s like a line of fifty hippies all going into the festival.British Library catalogue number: C2037/72 Project clip number: 29
