Abstract

Sub-Saharan Africa is the region of the world where the number of people without access to safe drinking water has increased significantly over the last decade. Solar adsorption desalination systems are a potentially competitive solution for combating water scarcity in Sub-Saharan Africa. This article presents a mathematical model for predicting the performance of a solar adsorption desalination system powered by parabolic trough collectors in Sub-Saharan Africa. A computer model based on mass and heat transfer was developed using Matlab software to predict the performance of the solar adsorption desalination system. The results of this numerical study show that the maximum specific daily water production is estimated at 8.5 The performance ratio of the adsorption desalination system is equal to 0.73. The thermal power of the parabolic trough collector field required to power the adsorption desalination system is estimated at 50 kW.
