Ukrainians Abroad: Identification Practices of Ukrainian Migrants
Abstract
The relevance of the research. The cultural diversity of Ukrainian society encourages each individual to interact constructively, to form a positive attitude toward representatives of other ethnic groups, and to develop knowledge about the surrounding cultures. Cross-cultural communication involves grasping the essence of understanding another individual while simultaneously ensuring that one is comprehended by them. In today's globalized world, cross-cultural communication and cross-cultural sensitivity are becoming important skills for successful communication and cooperation, as millions of Ukrainians who were forced to leave their homeland as a result of Russian aggression could see from their own experience. By integrating into the life of other countries, Ukrainians demonstrate their own cross-cultural sensitivity, making their contribution to the tolerant coexistence of different states. The purpose of the study is to identify innovations in the identification of everyday practices of Ukrainians developed as a result of adaptation to a different social environment and forced cross-cultural communication. Conclusions. The analysis of respondents' answers to the questions from a focused interview suggests that Ukrainian identity abroad is formed around the language, culture, traditions, family values and the desire to present their country with dignity. The majority of respondents emphasize the importance of their own behaviour and cultural integration without losing their national identity. The respondents believe that tolerance, respect for human rights, law-abidingness, mutual support, and a high level of culture are common values in the European environment. Based on the results of the interview, it is advisable to talk about the social diffusion of values and social skills that occurs during communication and living abroad. This "social diffusion" is explained by several factors: ‒ first, by adapting to a new culture. When moving to other countries, Ukrainians learn to understand local values, traditions and language and try to adapt to the cultural environment while preserving their identity; ‒ second, tolerance and openness. Interaction with people of different backgrounds develops respect for differences and a willingness to accept them without prejudice ‒ third, the exchange of cultural experience. Taking into account the difficulties of Ukrainians staying outside Ukraine, our state should create a national program for preserving Ukrainian identity abroad, which would include combating stereotypes, learning the Ukrainian language among children who have left Ukraine, and advertising the achievements of Ukrainian culture.
