Abstract

The issues of the formation of human rights journalism in Ukraine are poorly researched. The Code of Ethics of a Ukrainian journalist requires maximum attention to the observance of human rights at a time when journalistic materials about human rights often appear in the information space. Since 2011, the journalistic community has been actively discussing the need for special media topics, tools, and tactics, which were later defined as human rights or advocacy journalism practice. The purpose of scientific research is to identify the stages of the formation of human rights journalism in Ukraine, to typify the components and boundaries of the subject definition. Conclusions. Human rights journalism in Ukraine has gone from journalistic activism in human rights to a complex differentiated practice. The forms of this practice (advocacy, social and human rights journalism, and journalism of human rights) are not autonomous, they interact, and complement each other. The indicated construction of human rights journalism based on the unique Ukrainian experience of confronting discrimination, systemic human rights violations and Russian aggression can become a reliable tool for protecting democracy in other countries of the world.
