Abstract

These are geospatial datasets relating to wreckage and debris around the site where the German battleship Tirpitz was sunk off the island of Hakøya, Norway, in November 1944. The data have been generated by analysis of imagery collected from UAV (‘drone’) overflights of the area conducted in March 2023. There are three datasets. 1. ‘pointcloudgeo.txt’. Point cloud data describing the underwater geometry of the site. There are 494176 points in total. Each point is represented by a triplet of floating-point numbers, representing the (x,y,z) coordinates in metres. Planar (x,y) coordinates are in the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection, zone 34, using WGS84 ellipsoid. Z coordinates are relative to the mean flying altitude of the UAV and are hence all negative. These data have not been corrected for refraction effects at the air-water interface. 2. ‘DepthBelowWharf_32.tif’. Gridded bathymetric data for the study area, showing the water depth below a fixed datum. Depths (which have been corrected for the effect of refraction at the air-water interface) are in metres and the grid spacing is 0.25 metres. Increasingly positive values correspond to increasingly deep water. The datum is the highest point on the wharf structure (the wharf was used during the operation to salvage the wreck.) The dataset is stored as an image, in the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection, zone 34, using WGS84 ellipsoid. 3. ‘DebrisHeightNew2_geo.tif’. Gridded data estimating the height of debris above the sea floor. Heights are in metres and grid interval is 0.25 m. The dataset is stored as an image, in the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection, zone 34, using WGS84 ellipsoid.
