[Figure 49] Exquisite Bells (Cologne) - Edward Henderson and Caitlin Rowley (Studio/Stage: Entangling private and public creative spaces through interdisciplinary composition - Figures)
Abstract
Exquisite Bells (Cologne) was co-composed by Edward Henderson and myself (Caitlin Rowley) around a field recording of church bells and unexpectedly melodious screaming children that I made outside the cathedral in Cologne in August 2022. The recording's original purpose was as documentation of my travels, intended for use in Harry Matthews' Home & Away Chords, but the recording intrigued both Henderson and myself so we decided to work with it to create this separate piece. The sung note at the end of the piece is the pitch which Matthews' instructions ask me to capture in all of the 'away' recordings made for his work, and was sung as a response to the sounds I could hear around me. Retaining this note in our use of the recording for this piece suggests that here, the recording is not simply documentation of a location I was in at a certain time, but also documentation of my work with Matthews on his piece - the single recording has become multivalent in its use here, as I explain in Chapter 8.4 of my thesis.Audio recording © 2022 Edward Henderson and Caitlin Rowley
