Abstract

This article reflects on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research from the perspective of a sociologist of religion in the field of pastoral theology. It is based on more than ten years of collaboration at the Centre for Applied Pastoral Research (zap) at Ruhr University Bochum. Using three exemplary ‘systemic irritations,’ it highlights key differences in scientific work between sociology of religion and pastoral theology, particularly with regard to cognitive intention, proximity to the research object, and academic habitus. Divergent understandings of concepts, normative claims, and scientific cultures are identified as areas of significant tension. At the same time, the article shows that it is precisely these frictions that harbour considerable potential. Interdisciplinary research can lead to deeper insights when empirical analysis (‘what’) and practice-oriented interpretation (‘so what’) are clearly distinguished and at the same time reflectively intertwined.
