Fauna results from sediments traps on the Stylaster and Munida seamounts south of New Caledonia (Kanadeep2 and Kanarecup cruise)
Abstract
Extraction and sorting of swimming organisms on a 1 mm mesh. Table of abundances per sample with identification by major taxonomic group. Photographs of a selection of samples. Sorting was carried out using samples collected by sequential particle traps. The samples were fixed in 4% formalin, then the fraction larger than 1 mm was sorted. Samples intended for estimating particulate carbon and nitrogen fluxes were extracted according to the CNRS-LOV trap cell protocol. The traps were deployed for 12 months, with sampling over a 15-day period, alternately fixed in 4% formalin and RNAlater. The trap installed on Mount Stylaster yielded 12 samples fixed in formalin and 12 in RNAlater. On Munida, the trap operated for 8 months, yielding 8 formalin samples and 8 RNAlater samples.
