The Diocese and Archdiocese of Lublin of the Catholic Church, 1805–2024: Structures – Places – People
Abstract
The article presents the history of the Diocese and Archdiocese of Lublin from 1805 to 2024, with particular focus on territorial changes, the number of deaneries and parishes. It also addresses historical attempts to establish the autonomy of the Lublin Church, undertaken by ecclesiastical hierarchs as early as the 13th century. In addition to territorial structures, the article discusses male and female religious orders, which have been an important part of the universal Church and have operated within the diocese since 1805/07. An integral part of the article is the presentation of the places occupied by the Catholic Church as an institution, both within the city of Lublin and throughout the entire diocese/archdiocese. These include not only buildings used by the bishop and clergy (the bishop’s curia, seminary, cathedral, and parish churches), but also schools (including the university), the media, and social-charitable institutions. This portrayal of the diocese’s history is complemented by information about the people who shaped the Lublin Church, especially distinguished clergymen and martyrs of the diocese.
