Image and Word in the Political Theatre of Lublin in the 17th and 18th Centuries: On the Iconographic Context of the Visualization of the Lublin Sejm of 1703
Abstract
The political iconography of the Great Northern War is a subject poorly researched until now. The text is devoted to the visual propaganda of the Lublin Sejm of 1703 in the context of the memory cultivated about it, the medium of which was word and image. Both King Augustus II and his supporters, as well as the anti-royal opposition (the king – the Sejm of 1703, the opposition – the Warsaw Congress of 1704), tried to present their actions as the result of the consensus of the entire noble society. Not only the verbal message was used, but also the broadly understood visual message. In 1703–1704, there was a kind of duel of ceremonies – the Lublin Sejm vs. the Warsaw Congress of the opposition. Various forms of artistic expression – poetry, graphics, medals – were used for propaganda purposes.
