Abstract

The study is devoted to the process of revision of the Soviet past that took place in the USSR during the period of perestroika (1985–1991). The paper analyses the changing picture of Soviet history during this period, setting it within the paradigm of ‘historical politics’. The main directions of this policy and the factors which influenced its formation are presented. The formation of ‘historical policy’ is discussed by describing its structures, the creation of infrastructure within the ‘space of memory’ and the determinants that influenced its implementation. The use of the basic methods and tools of this policy during the perestroika period is illustrated, while indicating their links to specific practices.
