Not Only The Holocaust. On The Restoration Of The Memory Of Polish Jews By The Warsaw Ghetto Museum
Abstract
The Warsaw Ghetto Museum’s mission is to restore the memory of Holocaust victims and disseminate knowledge about the daily life, survival strategies, struggle and extermination of Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto and other ghettos in occupied Poland. Hence the Holocaust is dedicated to most of the Museum’s educational, publishing, scientific and exhibition activities. However, the WGM is not solely concerned with the Holocaust. Its activities address issues related to the commemoration of the Jewish presence in the public sphere, politics, art and culture, and the gallery opening the permanent exhibition will deal with the history of Jews in Warsaw before 1939. Moving beyond the Holocaust, the history of the Jewish community in Warsaw and the Polish lands has also been devoted by the Museum to several temporary exhibitions, both in the urban open space and in cultural institutions and galleries. The Museum thus complements in some way the activities of the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews or the offer of the Jewish Historical Institute. In this article, I briefly present this part of the Museum’s activity in 2018–2024.
