Abstract

This study examines the relationship between smart tourism destinations (STDs) and tourism in rural areas based on a systematic literature review of 43 articles retrieved from the Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO databases. The research identified core themes connecting both fields, such as the importance of using information and communication technologies (ICT) in rural tourism businesses, knowledge management as a driver of innovation, and stakeholder participation in the development of public policies for STDs. Other significant findings included changes in tourist consumption patterns, the need to ensure accessibility, improvements in promotion and marketing strategies, and the updating of skills among rural managers in light of new technologies. The geographical analysis revealed a concentration of studies in Europe and South America, indicating research gaps in other regions. The study concludes that there is a promising path for the expansion of STDs in rural areas, but success will depend on integrated strategies and appropriate policies. Coordination between technology, innovation, sustainability, and governance is essential for rural tourism to develop sustainably, inclusively, and competitively in the global context.
