Abstract

This study presents a service-learning (SL) experience focused on recycling and the self-construction of materials as resources for Physical Education (PE) classes. The aim was to raise environmental awareness to encourage attitudinal changes that contribute to improving cleanliness in the shared spaces of the school community. This issue was identified as a concern following feedback from both students and teachers, which motivated its address through an SL project within the PE curriculum. The participants were 28 adolescents from two third-year secondary school groups (one of which was part of a curricular diversification programme). A mixed-methods design was employed, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. The results indicate that the experience fostered sustainable habits, ecological awareness and learning, while also contributing to the creation of positive educational contexts (fun, motivating, and creative), all of which supported learning perception and demonstrated the benefits of implementing such initiatives. Differences were observed between the groups, favouring the students in the diversification programme, who perceived greater learning gains than their mainstream peers. These differences were reflected in improved self-esteem, social inclusion, understanding of interdisciplinary connections, and the use of educational materials beyond the educational context. It is suggested that the continuation of similar initiatives could encourage the development of environmentally responsible citizenship habits and promote sustainability, ultimately contributing to social transformation.
