The [My] Disabled Body As/In/Fertile Ground: An Arts-Based Exploration of Becoming-Disabled and Becoming-Mother
Abstract
In this article, I describe an arts-based, autoethnographic research project that reflexively explores becoming-disabled and becoming-mother. Through a/r/tography and critical autobiography, I place medical data, procedures, and classifications in artistic conversation with organic representations of in/fertility. I analyze narratives and handmade paper sheets I created during this process, drawing on Deleuzoguattarian philosophy, revolutionary maternal theory, and disability critical race studies to deconstruct normative imaginings of the mother and the body. I articulate becoming-disabled and becoming-mother as processes of de- and re-territorialization and posit visible disabled mothering as a practice to resistance to the ableist and racist ideology of normative motherhood.
