Abstract

The errors in the N.S. Korotkov tonometer used to estimate systolic pressure are due to several factors. The most significant of these is the methodological error associated with the assumption that the systolic pressure of the brachial artery and the cuff pressure are equal at the end of the occlusion process. The viscoelastic, mass, inertial, and damping properties of tissues create conditions for a falsely elevated intra-arterial pressure. Objective – to develop a mathematical model and study the process of pressure transfer from the cuff to the artery, taking into account the mechanical characteristics of the tissues involved in the pressure transfer. A series of calculations was performed using a physical model of the arm in combination with a hydro-cuff. The transfer of arterial pulse wave energy to the cuff is accomplished by changing the stress state in the surrounding tissues. Kelvin-Voigt physical models were used to describe the stress-strain state in this study. Practical Relevance. Taking viscoelastic properties into account allows for pressure adjustments to improve the accuracy of blood pressure measurements. The obtained results will enable the implementation of a new concept for developing hydrocuff systems for assessing hemodynamic parameters with improved operational and metrological characteristics.
