Abstract

Summary UK This report utilizes measurement data of ammonia emissions from Dutch dairy farms to improve emission models such as the KringloopWijzer (KLW) and NEMA.Data from several field projects were employed to analyze emissions from housing facilities and field applications. The KLW model was found to systematically underestimate ammonia emissions from barns on average. An enhanced model that integrates meteorological conditions with barn measurements demonstrates improved performance.During manure application on grassland, factors such as soil type, weather, and manure distribution influence NH₃emissions; sandy soils generally exhibit lower emissions than clay soils.A nitrogen and phosphorus flow chain analysis indicates that the models contain minor errors in feed intake and excretion estimates, and larger discrepancies in barn emission estimates. For more accurate assessments, multi-year data sets are required. It is recommended that management practices, soil types, and manure application methods be further investigated. The study demonstrates that incorporating measurement data into models results in more accurate emission estimates, providing essential information to achieve effective emission reductions.
