Abstract

Adding calcium cyanamide (CaCN2) to animal slurry inhibits the microbial decomposition of organic matter. This reduces methane production. Eminex® consists of 43% CaCN2 and is manufactured and marketed by Alzchem Trostberg GmbH. Laboratory studies have repeatedly demonstrated the inhibitory effect of Eminex® on methane emissions from dairy cattle manure. Comparative measurements under practical conditions are currently lacking and are necessary to estimate the reduction of methane emissions on dairy farms in practice. Measurements in the emission departments of Dairy Campus in Leeuwarden over a period of 12 weeks showed that methane emissions decrease by an average of 8.3% when Eminex® was added. This reduction increases over time. In the final week, the reduction was 14.4% compared to an untreated reference unit. Nitrous oxide emissions also decreased by 52.8% and 76.0%, respectively. Ammonia emissions increased by 9.3% and 1.7%, respectively. To determine the total effect on greenhouse gas emissions, it is recommended to include the production of Eminex® and the subsequent storage and application of treated animal manure.
