Comparison between blockbuster laryngeal mask airway and proseal laryngeal mask airway in paediatric patients under controlled ventilation
Abstract
Background and Aims: The ProSeal Laryngeal Mask Airway (PLMA) is an established second-generation supraglottic airway device in paediatric anaesthesia, valued for its reliable seal and gastric access. In contrast, while the Blockbuster Laryngeal Mask Airway (BLMA) has demonstrated efficacy in adults, evidence in the paediatric population is lacking. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of the BLMA with the PLMA in paediatric patients undergoing general anaesthesia with controlled ventilation. Methods: In this prospective, single-blinded, randomised controlled trial, we enrolled 54 children (ASA physical status I–II, aged 2–10 years, weighing 10–50 kg) scheduled for elective non-laparoscopic surgeries. Patients were randomly allocated to receive either the BLMA (Group B, n=27) or the PLMA (Group P, n=27). The primary outcome was oropharyngeal leak pressure (OLP). Secondary outcomes included insertion time, ease of insertion, first-attempt success rate, fibreoptic view of the glottis, ease of gastric tube insertion, and perioperative complications. Data were analysed using Student’s t-test or the Chi-square test, as appropriate, with a p-value
