Abstract

Background: Estimating GFR using estimation equations is a crucial tool for diagnosing kidney disease in sub-Saharan African countries. Since 2025, the online calculator of the SFNDT, the most widely used in sub-Saharan Africa, has undergone changes. Some equations have been added, while others have been removed. In light of these changes to the SFNDT calculator, the aim of this study was to identify which of these equations should be used to assess renal function in our black African Ivorian population. Materials and Methods: This was an analytical cross-sectional study which This was an analytical cross-sectional study witch included 183 patients. estimated GFR (based on creatinine and/or cystatin C) of these different patients using the SFNDT calculator was compared to the GFR measured by mass spectrometry, plasma iohexol clearance. The performance of the estimation equations was studied by calculating the median bias and 30% accuracy (P30) in comparison with the reference method. Results: The median GFR measured in the study population was 26 (19; 34) mL/min/1.73 m². Most patients (119, or 65%) already had a GFR below 30 mL/min/1.73 m². Overall, the estimation equations all performed relatively averagely. The EKFC equation performed best, especially when cystatin C was used as the biomarker. Conclusion: The EKFC equation is the best compromise for estimating GFR in our black African Ivorian population. However, given the relatively average performance of the different equations, further studies are needed to improve them.
